Born in Camagüey, Cuba, in 1921, Emilio Sanchez credited the landscape of his youth with developing his life-long interest in the effects of light and shadow on color. Although his early works explored figurative themes, Sanchez began his best known series of paintings and prints highlighting houses and other types of architecture in the 1960s.
The exhibit’s initial installment consists of a series of then and now photographs showing change over time, a section of publicly-supplied photography making individual statements of what county means to them, and some extensive information on the J.J. Walton family, their historic residence (now the Bates Steak House and Saloon), and their role in the county.

Taste and Flavor: Salty represents the life-giving essence of salt, the beauty of the sea, crowded beaches, haunting seascapes, boats, creatures of the ocean, salty foods and seafoods, and other nautical images. “Salty” human character portraits are also illustrated as well as stunning images of salt in true mineral formations. Mediums range from fiber and bead art to macchia style oil paintings.
This installation features distinguished examples of Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) through contemporary Korean calligraphy and painting as well as a selection of contemporary Korean ceramics.
