A Day in Florence

Whether you are overnighting in Florence or including one (or several!) of Lane County's unusual coastal attractions as you travel along Highway 101, you will agree - this part of Oregon is a "must see" on any itinerary.

Morning Options

Begin your day with a visit to the historic Old Town area of Florence, where you will soon discover the year-round appeal of this special place on the Oregon Coast. Wake up with a fresh cup of coffee from one of the two coffee roasters located here and get a feel for the local flavor as you share this part of your day with the friendly folk from Florence.

Dune Buggy
Adventure on the Dunes in Florence! Join the crews from Sandland Adventures or Sand Dune Frontier as they take you on a "mild" or "wild" tour of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in their special group-size buggies. The towering sand dunes reach heights of over 500 feet and provide recreational opportunities and wildlife viewing. (Allow approximately 1 hour)

Siltcoos Trail System Hike
This easy hike offers unforgettable wildlife viewing. This area features a river estuary, freshwater lagoon, quiet ocean beach, wetland ponds, coastal forest and diverse plant and animal communities. Oregon By Kayak offers tours along the Siltcoos River Trail from the lake to the ocean (Allow 2 hours for hike and 3 hours for kayak trip)

Siuslaw Pioneer Museum
Step back in time at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum where relics and historical information feature the Siuslaw River and its pioneers. The museum has recently relocated to an historic home in the town center. Home life, farming, fishing, lumbering and transportation are shown in displays and pictures. (Allow 1 hour)

Lunch on your own in Old Town Florence
Return to Old Town, a quaint shopping area of historical value with a large variety of shops, restaurants and galleries. Florence's Old Town is one of the most popular destinations on the Oregon Coast. Many Old Town buildings have been tastefully restored to give a picturesque bayside feel.

Afternoon Options

Heceta Head Lighthouse
Heceta Head Lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. Located at Devil's Elbow State Park, the lighthouse has been in continuous service since 1894. A short hike on a gravel path leads up to the lighthouse. View the light keeper's house and imagine what life was like for a solitary lighthouse keeper and his family. (Allow 1+ hours)

Sea Lion Caves
Sea Lion Caves, the largest sea cave in the world, is the only known remaining home of wild Steller sea lions on the North American mainland. It has attracted visitors from all over the world since opening to the public 65 years ago. (Allow 1 hour)

Darlingtonia Wayside
Oregon's only rare plant sanctuary is located six miles north of Florence on Highway 101, this delightful wooded park is home to the Darlingtonia Californica, better known as the Pitcher Plant or Cobra Lily. (Allow 30 minutes)

Dinner at Driftwood Shores
The finest Pacific seafood and an array of other tantalizing choices await you at Driftwood Shores. This oceanfront accommodation also offers a fine restaurant with spectacular ocean views. Relax and enjoy your dinner as you watch the changing sky hues as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.
