Largest Covered & Lit Skatepark in U.S. Opens in Eugene
The wheels start rolling at Washington Jefferson Skatepark + Urban Plaza today. New pictures to come!
Over the last several months rails, runs, bowls and decks have taken shape at the WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza in Washington Jefferson Park. At long last, the gates to this 23,000 square foot beauty will open. To celebrate, the community is invited to join Mark Scott and the rest of the Dreamland Skateparks (the masterminds who designed and built the park) crew today for an inaugural skate from 3 – 5 p.m. There is no charge to ride this park, which will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Plus, the benefit of I-105 bridge cover, will allow for activity rain or shine. The park is not only open to skaters, but to roller and inline skaters, scooter riders, and BMX bikers (plastic pegs and pedals are required to maintain the park).
Work on some of the other park renovations by local contractor- 2G Construction, will continue for the next few weeks, and fencing will remain in place in critical areas throughout the park. Additional improvements breathing new vitality into this urban space include accessible pathways, new restrooms, Wi-Fi, bike racks, benches, drinking fountains, energy-efficient lighting, improved landscaping, and areas to accommodate food carts and special events.
WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza is no ordinary skatepark. It is the collective vision of thousands of locals for more than a decade. Dreamland Skateparks created this park with both beginning and expert skaters in mind. The iconic ribbon, mini-snake run and the blend of varied skate terrain will ensure this skatepark is a destination for enthusiasts from around the country and will join the ranks of Eugene’s many world-class sporting venues.
The grand opening celebration will be held on National Go Skateboarding Day on Saturday, June 21. A full day of activities are in the works, including skateboarding lessons, competitions, demos, live music, vendors, and much more.
