Bonaparte's Retreat

Chico Schwall directs "Bonaparte's Retreat" at The Shedd Institute which features folkloric roots songs of rural America. When Cecil Sharp came to the United States 100 years ago, he came looking for old songs that were no longer sung in England and found them in southern Appalachia and northern cities. Song catchers of every stripe and motivation followed: academic folklorists and music lovers alike. Harold Courlander presented the first studies of Haitian and African American music, the WPA recorded songs and interviews in rural America and Alan Lomax recorded volumes of songs from Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie and others, along with a vast library of field recordings.
