Address:550 Pearl St
Eugene OR 97401
This magnificent full-size bronze statue of Steve Prefontaine was unveiled in July of 2022 in advance of the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 — the first time this international championship was held in the U.S. Steve Prefontaine was a record-breaking, long-distance running "phenomena" in the 70s. This Oregon native from Coos Bay ran for the University of Oregon Ducks, and then later for Team USA in the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was known throughout the community as an environmental activist and as an inspiring, unstoppable athlete. He was tragically killed in a car accident prior to the 1976 Olympics. Sculpture Mike Leckie, also an Oregon native, watched Pre run for the University of Oregon, giving him first-hand insight into how Pre moved. The Prefontaine statue took five years to create. It was cast in bronze by the Calcagno Foundry of Boring in Oregon. Leckie is an internationally-renowned artist sculpting in bronze and stone. His studio is in Eugene, but his works are in private homes and public spaces around the world. The Prefontaine statue is temporarily on display at the Market Alley in downtown Eugene through July until a permanent home is arranged.
