U.S. Center for SafeSport: Creating a SafeSport Culture

Presenter: Eric Barreras, Training and Technical Assistance Manager, U.S. Center for SafeSport

Session Description

The Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 requires national governing bodies and their affiliated youth programs to adhere to very specific guidelines to prevent and protect minor athletes from abuse. Whether your sports organization specifically falls under these guidelines or not, it is still essential to understand how to recognize and prevent abuse, as well as the mechanisms to report abuse. Keeping all youth safe when they participate in sports is critical to creating a healthy sports environment.

This new legislation designated the U.S. Center for SafeSport to serve as the independent national safe sport organization, with the responsibility for developing policies and procedures to prevent the emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of amateur athletes. The Center investigates sexual misconduct reports within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movements and establishes policies for the 50 National Governing Bodies (NGBs).

The session will provide an overview of the SafeSport Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention (MAAP) policies, and provide recommendations for creating safe environments for athletes, coaches and administrators.
