Mount June Trail #1400
This short but worthwhile trail travels uphill through Douglas fir, swordfern, and rhododendron; past a small, rocky meadow that’s rife with larkspur, broadleaf stonecrop, and castilleja; and finally up a steep, shady path that takes you to the top of Mount June. Once there, Mount June offers magnificent views of the Willamette Valley, the Oregon Coast Range, numerous peaks of the Cascade Range, and Crater Lake Rim.
You get to experience all of this while standing on the stone ruins of an old fire lookout. Mount June was once the site of a 50-foot pole platform fire lookout station. It was later replaced by a 50-foot wooden tower and cabin quarters. All structures have since been abandoned and destroyed. However, the stone foundation still remains, providing an unexpected yet picturesque setting for relaxing after a strenuous hike.
Detailed trail maps and descriptions can be found in the Cottage Grove Ranger District Recreational Opportunity Guide.
