Sports Planners to Learn About Upcoming Events at Renovated Hayward Field

Published: September 19, 2019

As part of the 2019 Oregon Sports Summit Series, the Eugene, Cascades & Coast Sports Commission is hosting a free event on Friday, October 18th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express Eugene-Springfield (919 Kruse Way, Springfield) to help area sports planners leverage the upcoming track and field events scheduled for the summers of 2020 and 2021 at the University of Oregon’s renovated Hayward Field.

The event, Leveraging the Summer of 2020 and Oregon21, will start with Kari Westlund who will provide event overviews and answer questions regarding the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in 2020 and the IAAF World Championships in 2021 (also known as Oregon21). Westlund is President and CEO of Travel Lane County and is currently co-chair of the 2021 Legacy Team committee which is focused on maximizing the transformative opportunity presented by hosting the IAAF World Championships.

An update on the Hayward Field renovations will be provided by Carlyn Schreck, Assistant Vice President for Presidential Initiatives at the University of Oregon. Schreck is the university’s lead for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field and the IAAF World Championships.

Keith Peters, a consultant with Mixed Zone Media, will highlight the many milestones that will occur at Hayward Field during the summers of 2020 and 2021 and will discuss how the local sports community can best leverage the events and the energy that will surround them. Peters, who is charged with marketing efforts for Hayward events, is a former Nike marketing executive and former executive director for the Center for Responsible Sport.

Beyond the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field and IAAF World Championships, Hayward will also host the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships and Diamond League Prefontaine Classic in 2020 and the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 and 2022.

Sports event planners, athletic directors, coaches, booster club members and local sports team and league members are encouraged to attend.
