SportsTown Awards are Back!

Eugene, Ore. – Mark your calendars for the second annual SportsTown Awards, presented by the Eugene, Cascades & Coast Sports Commission. Plan to join returning master of ceremonies Jordan Kent for the SportsTown Awards evening ceremony on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at the Valley River Inn in Eugene. Awards categories include Male and Female Student Athlete of the Year, Athletic Trainer of the Year, Athlete with Heart, Sustainable Sports Event of the Year, Inspirational Coach of the Year, Sports Promotion of the Year, Fan of the Year and the Mascot Showdown.


This year Dari Mart & the Eugene Emeralds are teaming up for the Mascot Showdown. All Lane County High School mascots will be up to win this coveted award. Online voting NOW OPEN!

Public nominations for Inspirational Coach of the Year, Sustainable Sports Event of the Year, Athletic Trainer of the Year, Fan of the Year and Athlete with Heart are open. Nominations close on April 12, 2017. To nominate go to

NEW this year, Sports Promotion of the Year, sponsored by the University of Oregon Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. This award will honor a business in Lane County that conducted a promotion in conjunction with a local sports event or organization that impacted the fan experience. This winner will have helped the local sports community grow through their support and sponsorship. To submit a nomination, please visit


The goals of the SportsTown Awards are to recognize the best achievements in sports tourism, recognize responsible / sustainable sports events practices, celebrate youth, prep and collegiate athletics, recognize fan interaction (mascots), identify inspirational stories, and celebrate significant local contributions to sports.


Janis Ross, Executive Director, Eugene, Cascades & Coast Sports Commission, noted “the Sports Commission’s objective is to position the SportsTown Awards as the premiere countywide sports recognition event, and to convey and celebrate the economic, social, and health values of sport. We look forward to the community’s participation in selecting the 2017 award winners.”

When asked about last year’s event Cesar Ocampo said “It felt like you were involved in something that was meaningful for the community. So many people have come up to me and congratulated me for winning [the 2016 Athletic Trainer of the Year]. I’m excited to see what they do this year.” Cesar Ocampo is the Athletic Trainer at North Eugene High School and Lane United Football Club. He was the winner of the 2016 Athletic Trainer of the Year.
