Iris Vineyards is simply a love story - both for wine and for a shared dream magnificently manifested by hotelier Richard Boyles and his wife Pamela Frye. When they met as students at the University of Oregon, a common interest in the culinary arts played into their courtship. Their early life together took them across Europe where they developed a deep appreciation for wine and food. Richard had fond childhood memories of helping his grandmother make wine and working on the family farm in Springfield, so upon returning to Oregon they sought out acreage for a vineyard. The land they selected just outside Cottage Grove was rich in bellpine, jory and dupe soils with slightly cooler but sunny slopes - just right for grapes which they planted in 1996.

Their commitment to sustainable practices within the vineyard also translated to their stewardship of the entire 875 acres (354 ha) parcel. Prior to their ownership, the land had been thoroughly harvested of its oak trees. In order to help restore the natural habitat, Richard and Pamela decided to preserve the remaining oaks across large swaths of their land. This also included planting more oaks and thinning the out the pine that was smothering the younger trees.

The family home and tasting room was designed by local architect James Givens. The vineyard tasting room first opened in 2004 but after a few years, tasting was offered solely from their winery facility in Cottage Grove while Iris Vineyards refined their distribution and marketing plans. In 2015, they re-opened the vineyard location and welcomed visitors back.
