Fern Ridge Lake is a popular recreation area for water sports, such as windsurfing, sailing, water skiing, flat water kayaking, stand up paddling, swimming and fishing.

Fern Ridge is south Willamette Valley's largest reservoir at 9,000 acres (3,642 ha), located west of Eugene and adjacent the Veneta (to the south) and Junction City (to the north) communities. It was created for flood control in 1941 by damming the Long Tom River. In the summer it is maintained at its maximum and in the winter it is drawn down.

Boat ramps are at Perkins Peninsula, Orchard Point and Richardson Parks. Regattas are held on Fern Ridge, and this is home to the Eugene Yacht Club. Orchard Point Park is one of its many accessible shoreline parks offering picnic facilities. This is also a popular camping destination.

Fish species: white crappie, brown bullhead catfish, largemouth bass and bluegill and native cutthroat trout. Extensive wetlands provide opportunities to view waterfowl and other wildlife. This is popular birding area.

During warm months, watch for algae blooms which may be harmful to people and pets.
