Proposed Golden Gardens Park Outdoor Sports Complex

Features and Benefits

Golden Gardens is a 223-acre public park in northwest Eugene, just over four miles from Eugene Airport. Currently, the park merely consists of walking trails, old farmland fields and artificial quarry ponds. The City of Eugene is working to build a sports complex in the park, which could include:

  • 14 sports fields
  • 3 full-size baseball fields
  • 5 softball/baseball fields
  • 6 soccer/football/lacrosse fields
  • Sports courts that include pickleball, basketball and sand volleyball courts
  • A neighborhood park
  • 160+ acres set aside as a habitat conservation area with trails
  • Parking for more than 1,000 vehicles that are spread throughout the facility
  • Concession buildings, food truck parking, restrooms and lighting

The community is in desperate need of an outdoor sports complex with enough fields and variety to support youth, adult and professional sports team practices and games. This complex would not only meet those needs, but it would also bring in revenue by hosting football, soccer, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, softball and baseball competitions year-round.

This facility would be set up to host both practices and competitions with the potential to be the training base for Lane United FC’s men's and women's United Soccer League (USL) teams.

The City of Eugene has developed a thoughtful recommendation for the future of Golden Gardens Park in west Eugene. Balancing the community's needs, the natural resources, and the significant demand for outdoor spaces to recreate and play is challenging. The City staff and their consulting team have struck an exciting balance, showing a deep understanding of what this project means for the neighborhood.

Economic & Neighborhood Benefits

Golden Gardens will bring much-needed recreational access to the underserved Bethel neighborhood, providing welcome natural spaces and community activities. Beyond the immediate benefits of the park, this significant development has the potential to bring together families and neighbors through support programs such as childcare and after-school activities. (See examples like Willamalane’s afterschool program, Capital Futbol Club’s GRASSP and TOPSoccer and Friday night Futsal with Rogue X and Southern Oregon Futsal.)

The largest municipal installation of FieldTurf in the United States with nearly 1.5 million square feet of synthetic grass is in Medford, Oregon at the Lithia & Driveway Fields complex. Opened in May of 2008 at a cost of $32 million, the complex has hosted over 47,000 youth games and has generated over $160 million in economic impact. The complex generated close to $12 million in 2023. The 132-acre park has three full-sized baseball fields, seven softball/baseball fields and five soccer/football fields. In 2023, the complex hosted adult softball, youth baseball, senior softball, fastpitch, soccer, youth fastpitch and more. With FieldTurf, the outdoor sports facility hosts events every month of the year, not needing to take a break because of rain or muddy fields despite being in Oregon.

Creating community assets like these often encourages additional private development. Building sports fields can draw in coffee shops, restaurants, and other businesses, as seen in the development around Lithia Driveway Fields in Medford or AdventHealth Sports Park in Overland Park.

Identified Need

Golden Gardens Park was recognized as early as 2006 as a location for a program that would serve a growing population’s need for sports. A jointly funded service study by the City of Eugene Parks and Open Spaces, Willamalane, and Travel Lane County was completed in 2016 and affirmed the need for more outdoor recreation and sports facilities.

Sports fields were identified for building in the 2018 City of Eugene Parks bond, but with no funding remaining from the bond, the future of the buildout is uncertain. The current timeline for completing the park stretches far into the future, with some estimates putting completion as far out as 2035 - nearly 30 years after the need was first recognized.

The Solution

There is a solution! The Golden Gardens Park outdoor sports complex will provide an opportunity to better serve local youth and adult outdoor recreation needs while drawing groups of people here throughout the year.

The latest design for Golden Gardens presents an opportunity to support healthy habitat while also helping the community. Concerns for the Western Pond Turtle have been addressed through thoughtful design, such as the setback of the walking path for breeding areas, the type of synthetic surfaces used for athletic fields, and the strategic location of basketball and pickleball courts, parking, and other resources around the periphery of the site.
